W.E. Gowling Writing Competition - Reminder



W.E. Gowling Writing Competition

This is for any student wanting to test their hand at writing their OWN children’s book and/or song (or rap!).

All contestants will be judged based on their use of:
1)     “The 3 R’s” of writing for children (Rhyming, Rhythm & Repetition)
2)     Creativity
3)     Illustrations (if a story)
4)     Melody (if a song)

Deadline Friday June 12th, 2015 – hard copy submissions should be given to your child’s teacher (recorded songs or raps can be sent to gowlingfest@gmail.com -- if help is needed with recordings please let us know).

A diverse panel of judges will review all submissions.

And the prizes are…

First Prize
Two Runners Up

1)     A FREE creative art class of their choosing - at the Nepean Creative Art Centre!
2)     A $20 GIFT CERTIFICATE to CHAPTERS.
3)     A coupon for FIVE FREE books at the used book sale.
4)     A beautiful CERTIFICATE OF HONOR.
5)     The opportunity to showcase their book or song during the story telling festivities of the day.

Song &Story Fest Book Donations - Reminder


Hello all!
Please remember that STARTING JUNE 1st the W.E. Gowling Parent Council will be accepting all Book, Music, Box and Bag donations - That's Monday of next week!! Here is the information about donations:

DONATE BOOKS AND MUSIC
BOXES AND BAGS
SORTING
Books and music may be dropped off directly at the library – on or near the yellow tables at the back of the room.
Prizes are awarded for the top collector classes!!
Please remember to send a note to your child’s teacher with the number of books/albums so that they may count towards your child’s class tally!
We need many boxes and bags! Please bring them to the Library.
Come any time (during school hours) to the Library and help sort books. Even 5 minutes can really help.
Parent volunteers must sign in and out at the front office and will have early access to sale items (to a limit of 5 books).

BBQ, Bake Sale, Workshops, Book Readings, Face Painting and MORE!

W.E. Gowling Song & Story Fest


W.E. Gowling Song & Story Fest: Details 

When: June 20th, 2015 – 9:00am to 4:00pm 
Where: 250 Anna Ave. - W.E. Gowling Gymnasium (and outside if weather permits). 

We need help in the following areas 
* SEND IN YOUR BOOKS and MUSIC!!! Book and Music collection starts Monday, June 1st! The more books and music we collect, the more we can support literacy at W.E. Gowling. Prizes are awarded for the top collector classes!! 
* BOXES and BAGS!!! Whether from the grocery store, LCBO (wine boxes are the perfect size), or from your house, we need many boxes and bags!! Please bring them to the Library. 
* SORTING!!! After June 1st, come any day, any time (during school hours) to the Library (yellow tables at the back), and help sort some books. Everyone is welcome. There will be signs, so that you know where to put the books. Even 5 minutes can really help. Parent volunteers must sign in and out at the front office and will have early access to the sale items (to a limit of 5 books). 
* VOLUNTEER for a shift on June 20th, we need you to help out on cash, scheduled activities, BBQ and/or the bake table. Shifts are short, you can pick whatever times fit your schedule: (http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0b4aa8a829a0fe3-we) 
* BAKING and PRESERVES – Many people love buying a treat when shopping for books. Any baked goods or preserves are appreciated. Whether home made of store bought, they must be NUT FREE. Please bring your items on the day of the event ready for sale. 

Important Points to Remember

* BOOKS WE ARE ACCEPTING – in French or English - Adult and Children’s Fiction, Non-Fiction, Reference Books, Audio Books, VHS, DVDs, Unused Workbooks and Colouring books. 
* BOOKS WE ARE NOT ACCEPTING – Textbooks, User Manuals, Encyclopedias, Magazines, Romance Novels, Travel and Guide books over 5 yrs old. 
* MUSIC WE ARE ACCEPTING – CDs and Vinyl Records. 

Fun Stuff for Gowling Students
Book and Music Drive Prizes: The “Top Book/Music Collector Award” will be awarded to one class. There will also be a random draw for a second class – every 25 books/albums brought into a class earns a ticket for the random draw. Every student from the winning classes will receive a coupon for a free item from Song and Story Fest plus an afternoon visit from the cupcake fairies. 

Writer Challenge: This is for any Gowling student (of any age) wanting to test their hand at writing their OWN children’s book and/or song (or rap!).
