Song & Story Fest - Kalli Dakos is Back!

2016 Song & Story Fest May, 14th - Third Activity of the Day

11:00am - Poetry Workshop with Kalli Dakos
*Back by Popular Demand!!*

Kalli Dakos (W.E. Gowling Alum) has been celebrating the school world since the release of her best-selling book, If You’re Not Here, Please Raise Your Hand, Poems About School. She has written many collections of school poems. These include five IRA-CBC Children’s Choice selections – Our Principal Promised to Kiss a Pig, If You’re Not Here, Please Raise Your Hand, Don’t Read This Book Whatever You Do!, The Goof Who Invented Homework, and The Bug in Teacher’s Coffee. Kalli’s poems reveal the funny – and sometimes poignant – stories that take place in an elementary school bathroom. Marc Beech’s zany illustrations perfectly express the ups and downs of school life.

Kalli visits schools all over the United States and Canada, and is now working internationally in schools as far away as Hong Kong. As a former teacher and reading specialist, she uses her educational background to design school visits that provide sound reinforcement for standards of learning disguised as high-energy fun and filled with audience participation. Her huge selection of props and toys pulls in even the most reluctant readers and writers and keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. Everyone becomes involved in the drama of the elementary school world.

Children discover a goldmine of writing possibilities, from the pencils on their desks to the secrets in their hearts. Teachers, principals, custodians, secretaries and parents are all encouraged to read, write, and perform poetry along with the students.

Jo Rioux - Manga Caricatures

2016 Song & Story Fest May, 14th - Second Activity of the Day

Jo Rioux will do personalized Manga caricatures for anyone who would like their portrait done!

(10:30am kick-off... but she will be with us all day!)

Jo Rioux was born and raised in Ottawa, Canada. As a child, she read comics voraciously, first in her native French and later in English. Attending a high school for the arts was an early step in an artistic path, which lead to the illustration program at Sheridan College. After graduation, she was drawn to children's books, and illustrated the graphic novel series Sam: Dog Detective for Kids Can Press. Her love for the comic medium spurred her to author her first graphic novel series, Cat's Cradle. She lives in the lush suburbs of her hometown, where, when not working at her drawing desk, she can be found nestled within a pile of books.

2016 Song & Story Fest Writing Awards

2016 Song & Story Fest - First Activity of the Day (May, 14th)

W.E. Gowling Song & Story Fest Writing Award Presentations

During the Song & Story Fest opening ceremony (10 am on May 14th) we will be presenting awards to the winners of the W.E. Gowling Writing Competition. Here are the competition details...

Writer Challenge: This writing competition is for any W.E. Gowling student (of any age) wanting to test their hand at writing their OWN children’s book and/or song (or rap!). The winner will be judged based on their use of “the 3 R’s” of writing for children (Rhyming, Rhythm & Repetition), creativity, illustrations (if a story) and melody (if a song). I have attached the scoring grid that we used last year -- and will likely use again this year.

Deadline Friday May 6th, 2016 – hard copy submissions should be given to the child's teacher (recorded songs or raps can be sent to gowlingfest@gmail.com -- if help is needed with recordings please let us know through this e-mail address as well). The submissions will then be collected and reviewed by a panel of judges. The winners will have the opportunity to tell their stories - or perform - on stage at 10:00 am, during the opening ceremonies of the 2016 Song and Story Festival.

The 2016 WINNER will receive:
1) A FREE creative art SUMMER CAMP of their choosing - at the Nepean Creative Art Centre!
2) A Chapters Gift Bundle
3) A coupon for FIVE FREE books at the used book sale.
4) A beautiful CERTIFICATE OF HONOUR.
5) The opportunity to showcase their book or song during the story telling festivities of the day.

The TWO 2016 “runner up prizes” will be:
1) A Chapter's Gift Bundle
2) A coupon for FIVE FREE books at the used book sale.
3) A CERTIFICATE OF HONOUR
